Sweden produces two things that the rest of the automotive world has struggled to replicate: a particular philosophy of safety, and a particular kind of interior calm. The XC90 is where those two things meet at their most resolved. Volvo designed the second-generation XC90 to be the car that said everything that needed saying about the brand — and then built it to last long enough to mean it.
The D5 twin-turbo diesel is the engine the XC90 was always meant to have. Two turbines in sequence: the smaller one builds pressure immediately at low revs, the larger one takes over as speed climbs. The result is 235 HP and 480 Nm delivered with a smoothness that diesel engines at this level have no business achieving. Through the eight-speed Aisin automatic and Volvo's AWD system, it moves with a quietness and composure that makes distances disappear.
White on the XC90 is an emphatic choice — it reads clean and authoritative in a way that darker colours cannot match. Inside, the tan and black leather combination gives the cabin warmth without fussiness. The panoramic sunroof opens the already generous space further. Harman Kardon's 14-speaker system fills it with sound that rewards the effort Volvo put into the acoustic insulation. Seven seats, properly configured.
